1. In standard A-1.4, students are required to know how to solve additions, subtraction, multiplication, and division word problems. These operations are extremely important because students are learning that a mix-up of operations (multiplying instead of dividing) could result in the wrong answer for a problem. My class seems to be very intelligent though, so they have seemed to have mastered this standard already. Mistakes do happen though, so it is important to emphasize this benchmark.
2. The concepts taught in the Everyday Math are things such as putting multiplication and division problems all on the same page so that students really have to focus and pay attention to the problem. Our cooperating teacher also goes over all the homework problems so that students can check their work.
3. An example of a word problem in the Everyday Math is “Sara fills her car tank up with 7 gallons of gasoline. If each gallon costs $3.22, how much does her tank cost?” This problem is important because the students have to decide whether or not to use multiplication, division, or both. It is a great problem because the students are moving into decimals soon.
